Loco questions
How large is ETCS obsolescence risk?
Material without ETCS Level 2. Retrofit €350–500k. Vectron MS and Traxx MS3 ship compliant — otherwise cross-border rent dies.
How long is a heavy overhaul?
Every 7.5 years, 3–4 months, €600k–1.2m. Over 35–40 years typically 4–5 cycles — the line must sit in the model.
What does TSI conformity mean?
EU-wide acceptance without national exceptions: ETCS L2 Baseline 3, common brake standards. Retrofit €50–500k by vehicle.
Why multi-system costs more — and rents for more
Locomotive families
The EN 284 analogue on the traction side is TSI LOC&PAS plus ETCS Baseline 3: without multi-system and Level 2 the loco stays on national islands. The market moved from single-system BR 152 / BB 26000 types to platforms with four power systems.
| Family | Power / systems | Units / list | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Siemens Vectron MS (BR 193) | 6.4 MW · 4 systems · ETCS B3 factory | >1,500 (end-2024) · €3.8–4.2m | Cross-border DE–PL–CZ, premium lease |
| Alstom Traxx MS3 | Last-mile diesel · port feeder | >2,500 · €3.5–4.0m | Unelectrified last mile |
| Stadler EuroDual | 7 MW bi-mode · 6 axles | €5.0–6.0m | Ore, heavy haul PL/SE |
| Newag Dragon 2 | 6 axles · ETCS L2 | ~€3.0m | Poland growth |
ETCS retrofit on legacy locos: €350–500k. Since 2023 TSI LOC&PAS requires Level 2 Baseline 3 for new cross-border authorisations — the entry barrier, analogous to Class C for swap bodies.
Private locomotive operators
Loco leasing is more concentrated than the wagon market — the VEGA/AXIS analogue, with million-euro tickets.
Alpha Trains
~700 locos, leader for independent RUs.
Akiem
~700 locos, majority SNCF subsidiary.
Railpool
~470 locos, strong DACH.
Beacon Rail
~370 locos + trainsets.
ELL
~300 Vectron MS, youngest growth name.
MRCE Dispolok
~250 locos, DACH focus.
Standard terms 8–10 years operating lease. Captrain and ATIR-Rail hire; they are not pure lessors.
Energy sources & economics
Four catenary voltages force multi-system: 15 kV / 16.7 Hz (DE/AT/CH/SE/NO), 25 kV / 50 Hz (BE/FR/CZ/HU/SK/southern EU), 3 kV DC (PL/IT/BE/SI), 1.5 kV DC (NL/southern FR). Without the pack the train stops at Frankfurt/Oder, Görlitz or Zebrzydowice.
- Electric: lowest energy cost per 1,000 tkm on electrified TEN-T corridors.
- Diesel (Class 66, DE18): flexible, dearer fuel, TSI Noise and exhaust pressure.
- Hybrid / last-mile (Traxx MS3, EuroDual): port feeders and worksites without wire — premium rent, higher capex.
Loco residual curve: years 0–10 ~−30%, 10–25 linear, 25–35 main overhaul €600–900k, then secondary lines or CEE resale. Liquidity below containers, above many other real assets.
